Paragliders soaring above the coast at Wilderness

Wilderness · Garden Route · South Africa

Twenty-one hectares above the Indian Ocean.

A small eco resort on the ridge right beside the Map of Africa. Forest behind, ocean in front, and a paragliding launch next door.

Book direct: best rate and a real person on the other end.

Ecoresort Wilderness is a privately owned eco resort on 21 hectares in Wilderness, on South Africa’s Garden Route.

We sit on the ridge above the Kaaimans River gorge, right beside the Map of Africa viewpoint and one of the country’s best-known paragliding launches. Below us: Wilderness Beach. Behind us: the Outeniqua Mountains.

The land was a working farm. We are returning it to indigenous forest and fynbos and build only on ground that was already cleared. Three places to stay are open today.

Coming next

Slowly, there is more to come.

Over the coming years a small guest house and a handful of cottages will join the three places that are open today. They go only where the ground was already disturbed and are designed to disappear into the landscape, while the rest of the land returns to forest and fynbos.

The Kaaimans River loop, known as the Map of Africa

The Estate

The land does most of the work.

Below us the Kaaimans River bends into the loop that gave the Map of Africa its name. Bushbuck graze the forest edge at dusk, Knysna turacos call from the milkwoods, and on summer afternoons the paragliders hang above the beach.

A botanist has mapped the indigenous cover. Every building footprint sits on terrain that was already disturbed, so nothing indigenous is cleared for us to be here.

Before you come

The questions we get asked.

Where exactly is Ecoresort Wilderness?

On the ridge at 381 Remskoen Street, Wilderness 6560, on South Africa's Garden Route, right beside the Map of Africa viewpoint. George Airport is about 20 minutes away by car and Cape Town about five hours.

Can I book right now?

Yes. Three places are open today: the Nature Retreat cottage and two studios, one with a sea view and one with a mountain view. More will follow on the ridge over the coming years.

Can I paraglide from the property?

The Map of Africa launch is right next to our land, about 220 metres from the cottage. Tandem flights with local pilots need no experience and land on Wilderness Beach. Read our paragliding guide.

What does eco resort mean here?

The land is being returned to indigenous forest and fynbos, and every building goes only on ground that was already disturbed.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The last stretch is a well-maintained gravel road, fine for normal cars but not for very low ones, and there is no public transport. Beach and village are about 5 km away.
